Mário Peixoto claimed to be Mário José Breves Rodrigues Peixoto, although all of his documents read Mário Breves Peixoto. He was the son of João Cornélio Rodrigues Peixoto and Carmen Breves Rodrigues Peixoto. His mother was a descendant of Commendator Joaquim José de Souza Breves who was the greatest coffee grower and slave dealer in the imperial system; and his father was a descendant of the Rodrigues Peixoto family, the sugar mill owners from the city of Campos. João Cornélio attended the Polytechnical School and there are evidences that he studied Chemistry in Belgium, period during which Mário Peixoto would have been born. When he returned to Brazil, he seemed to have worked with no pay in the Botanical Garden. His parents were related: Carmen was the mother-in-law’s cousin, whose name was Cornélia Rodrigues Peixoto. Actually, Mário Peixoto’s fortune came from the Rodrigues Peixoto family and not from the Breves, who had already become poor at that time.

In 1929, Peixoto was visiting Paris when he was struck by a powerful illustration he saw on the cover of a French magazine, a womans face staring straight ahead with the handcuffed hands of a man in the foreground. This haunting image inspired Peixoto to write a scenario for a projected film in one night. Sometime after his return to Brazil in October 1929, he brought his scenario to the attention of a group of theatrical friends with ties to film circles in Rio de Janeiro. Most of them were uninterested, but one actor, Brutus Pedreira, was very enthusiastic about Peixotos scenario for the proposed film, Limite. With Pedreiras encouragement, Peixoto tried to interest Adhemar Gonzaga and Humberto Mauro in directing the film for their company, Cinédia. However, Gonzaga was preoccupied with the organization of the new studio and Mauro was beginning to film Lábios sem Beijos. As a result, Peixoto decided to direct the film himself, and with Gonzagas support, his ambition was realized. Gonzaga recommended Peixoto choose as his cinematographer Edgar Brazil, the cameraman on Mauros classics, Braza Dormida and Sangue Mineiro. Gonzaga also obtained on loan the camera Brazil had used to shoot those films. Peixoto purchased a second camera for the production and began assembling his principal players: Raul Schnoor; Taciana Rey, an actress employed at Cinédia; Olga Breno, a recruit from the theatre; and Brutus Pedreira.

"Límite", the only film completed by its creator Mario Peixoto, is considered one of the most important works in the history of Brazilian cinema. It descends directly from Soviet cinema, German expressionist cinema and Griffith’s classic American cinema. It adds artistic value to filmmaking. The film brings enormous innovations in terms of language, with its slow pace, images of Brazilian landscapes and revolutionary camera work that combines static framing with dizzying movements, underpinned by an erudite soundtrack. The film deals with the essential limitation of the human condition, and fundamental futility of human action.
For decades, "Límite" was rarely screened, since the only existing copy was in the hands of its creator, who demanded a suitable projector to screen it. Later, a slow restoration process kept it away from screens. Due to its impact, and the rarity of the screenings, the film was frequently cited as the most talked about and least seen film in the history of Brazilian cinema. Its true virtues only started to be appreciated after careful restoration, carried out between 1960 and 1977. The 35mm film, on a cellulose nitrate base, was beginning to decompose, to the point that a small scene was almost completely lost. Around 2002, a new restoration was carried out.
"Límite" was filmed in Mangaratiba and other points along Rio de Janeiro coast, between May and October 1930, and editing finished in January 1931. It was never screened commerciall...
